Higgins-Post Class(10/6)

This past class we discussed Lyotard and the concept of "realism", what it means and how it can be viewed in our culture today. The question was asked where our society can see realism in media and I would say a good example would be the satire we experience in popular shows such as Family Guy and The Simpsons. The idea behind the shows is not only to entertain but to express opinions on political and economical issues without directly stating it. One could relate it to being an educated style of sarcasm. Media is a great way to delve into deeper social issues without the animosity that comes along with face to face contact. The popularity from the shows give the ability to accomplish a lot of public persuasion due to the sheer numbers that view it. It is very interesting to see how people re-act to satire. Usually when a touchy subject is brought up people have a tendency to tackle it with anger but this style allows for an opportunity to come from a different angle that makes more headway on the issue in the eyes of the public. Lyotard emphasized on how powerful realism can be when presented in a proper way and in my opinion the media is the best way to display its truest form. Satire will always be around for it provides a humerous side while still discussing the larger everyday issues of our society.
