AsToldByGinger, Post Jameson

Our class discussion involving Jameson gave me a greater understanding of him and the main ideas he presents in his work. I enjoyed splitting up and discussing his thoughts more in depth and then presenting them to the class. The break down of "Diamond Dust Shoes" and "Peasant Shoes," highlighted the central theme that Jameson believes that being postmodern is about depthlessness, "The first and most evident is the emergence of a new kind of flatness or depthlessness, a new kind of superficiality in the most literal sense - perhaps the supreme formal feature of all the postmodernisms..." (412).

I also enjoyed the juxtaposition of the two paintings and the discussion that arose with the question, why did Jameson want us to look at these works together in the first place? We answered that he did this to highlight the separation of reality, hardships and resulting from experiences, and class struggle related to history and context. I thought it was interesting how Warhol took shoes, something created to protect our bodies and help us work, and then created a painting that commodified them, and highlighted the new role that shoes have taken on. This makes me wonder though, what would Jameson have said about the newest shoe trend, sneaker wedges? Why did society create them and what are they commenting on? Maybe this question could be addressed in our next class.
