Jameson- post class fang fiesta king runner up

So after class, DC, John, and I got in a conversation about the upcoming fiesta celebration on Mills Lawn. Like normal cynical people, we quickly got into how absurd it was that there was a celebration called Fiesta which doesn't really celebrate anything and puts on the facade of a relation to Mexican culture by serving tacos with the same filling you get at the campus center and a mariachi band even though there was also a snowball machine and popcorn maker. After just a few minutes, we realized that Fiesta is CMC300 gold.

Starting with the range of "activities"and "entertainment," Fiesta embodies Jencks's notion of radical eclecticism as there was no real central thing going on at Fiesta. It was fairly dark (sorry Kelly and/or Ally that might have waved at me and I had no idea what was going on) and most of the people were just there because they saw a tent which translated to free food. The passive enjoyment of a "dormant" Rollins tradition correlates to Jameson's notion of "waning affect." We all got so excited over free food and the postmodern eclecticism of a poorly lit feast that nobody takes a step back and critically looks at the fact that we are having a celebration of faux-Mexican culture with really nothing going on (yes they said it was a birthday celebration for Rollins but I saw no Rollins signs and 5 piƱatas that said Fiesta). The flier itself advertised "a float parade, live animals, fortune telling, carnival booths, and Fiesta kings and queens" which has nothing to do with Rollins or pseudo-Mexican culture.

Marketing and Communication took pictures of everything from the mariachi band to the long line at 6:30pm of people waiting to get food and by the time it was raffle and the crowning of the fiesta overlords, there were no cameras or band and in seemingly the blink of an eye the great fiesta gone and it was just a couple dozen people hoping they won the raffle. I guess on some level it was good for the school as it fed a hundred or so people but it really just seemed like a facade for the alumni relations office and its traditions committee that put on the event.

And to top it all off, I didn't even win Fiesta King. Down with Fiesta! Down with R-Pride!
