Difference is "what is at issue between speech and writing." It seems that he is trying to get at the differences between two things in different forms. He commented on the idea of the pocket watch on a chain that was the everyday watch for the wealthy man, and now that same device is on nearly every man in the worlds wrist. they both do the same thing, but there is a slight difference wight he look and attitude of them. The first thing that i can think of is when we were talking about cars and how they essentially all get your from "A-B." This relates to the idea that there are social factors involved in them. A superior car such as a Mercedes Benz, will get you from A-B, but in return you will drive in superior luxury, comfort, and class. Unlike a common car such as a Honda, or Toyota, where people are looking for nothing more than a reliable Vehicle. Both of the vehicles serve the same purpose, but there are many underlying factors that differentiate them socially such as class signifiers, etc...

Something that is being is a certain behavior when we think of it in terms of the Human Being, while a beings are that of the reaction of a certain behavior. Since we are doing this behavior we are now classified as it, it is in our blood. This could pertain back to the automobile issue with the idea or a drive, and a driver. We all drive cars, but when we are drivers, we are now a label that is placed upon us as a skill that we all have learned. There is a suttle difference that i believe he is trying to get at. It is that difference between "difference and difference." They change the meaning of the world entirely, and it helps us to really understand what we are trying to get at.
