Higgins- Pre Class Post

"A science that studies the life of signs within society is conceivable; it would be a part of social psychology and consequently of general psychology; I shall call it semiology. Semiology would show what constitutes signs, what laws govern the.(Saussure 1974:16)" The true meaning behind signs are individually complex. The author seems to build off the concept that their is a unwritten code being created through the use of signs, particularly "pub" signs. The whole system uses the association between langue and parole which refers to the understanding of a particular language and what is actually being stated. The idea that a simple pub sign could have a significant meaning to a particular group of people is fascinating. "Signs can only arise on inter-indiviual territory and therefore the sign is always ideological. (Voloshinov 1973: 12)" The way language is perceived is heavily upon the use of sound and linguistics. For many cultures the way they pronounce a word could entail that it has a completely different meaning even it was spelled the same, however has two definitions. The reading really goes into depth into the idea of the "signifier" and "signified", basically building off the concept of action and reaction of what/how people speak. "Language is a system of interdependent terms in which the value of each term results solely from the simultaneous presence of the others. (Saussure 1916:7)" The way society and cultures separate themselves most of the time is through the language they speak. So, its no surprise that the pure concept of tone in which they speak it is important as well.
