In response to ruqayyahali 9/08

Ali, after reading your post and completely agreeing with you, a recent viral video came to mind. This video, which depicts the day of a typical middle to upper class woman living in the United States, shows how dependent and concerned, we as a society are on with our phones. We are constantly "plugged" into our social media lives, concerned more with what is going on in this cyber realm, than the actual present we are living in. The video highlights these unfortunate truths that are becoming more and more prevalent among social circles as each day passes.

To answer your question, yes I absolutely believe that post modernity forces us into the fascination of being busy because it is the "in" thing to do. We are constantly in competition with each other to see who is busier, who is doing more, who is going to further places, and the obsession to let everyone know about it. For example in the video a man is seen proposing to his fiancé while simultaneously holding his phone up to capture the moment. As I understand that it is a memorable moment that the couple will want to look back on the rest of their life, it is clear to see that the intentions are to put picture up on instagram / twitter / facebook
as soon as she says yes. The reason? To make sure all of the couples "friends" (followers) know about it, and know that the couple is definitely having a better day than the rest of the people posting. It’s no wonder that we feel schizophrenic, balancing this double life: being in the present moment, but also managing the image presented on social media sites. Doing this successfully literally requires a dual personality, something that the post-modern life nearly demands.
